Our Ministries
Our Recreation Philosophy:
Through a dynamic program of Christian recreation we seek to provide a Christ-centered environment where individuals of all ages with diverse interests may encounter God, experience growth in relationships, enjoy Christian fellowship, and witness to their faith in Jesus Christ.
Recreation Programs at AUMC
Aerobics
Rainbow Aerobics:
Classes are held from 9:15 - 10:15 a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays (Sept. - May) in the Christian Life Center. This is a lower impact class for men and women. Contact Sue Meekins or Helen Mullen for more information.
Attitude Aerobics:
Classes are held from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays in the Christian Life Center. This is a class for all ages, shapes and sizes, and it can be geared as low-impact, moderate exercise or as a high-intensity workout. Contact instructor Susan Moore for more information.
NIA Class
NIA, Neuromuscular Integrated Activity, introduces you to the alchemy and chemistry of World and Ethnic Dance, Yoga, Akido, Tai-Chi, Chi-Gon, Tae Kwon Do, and Meditation all in one. NIA is lots of fun too, allowing you to express yourself via these movement forms. NIA provides an alternative to regular aerobics. NIA is held on Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m.
Basketball
Adult:
Informal scrimmaging is held on Thursdays from 8-10 p.m. in the Christian Life Center. Just drop in - we have basketballs, a range of ages, a little talent and lots of enthusiasm!
Youth:
A series of basketball clinics for 6th-8th graders from the local community and church is being held in the Fall and Spring for six week intervals. This program focuses on local kids whose guidance counselors have identified as needing extra attention to keep them performing well at school. Pre-registration is required. Adult volunteers are welcome, and are trained in child protection guidlines. The program is sponsored by AUMC, the Annandale Coalition, local schools, and with support from the Mason District Police.
Softball
Each spring, Annandale United Methodist
Church fields teams in the Fairfax County Church League. The 16-game season
runs from May to early July, and the league is open to anyone 15 or older.
To sign up, contact Jimmy
Naples for the men's team and Ted
Hobson or Abbey Robison
for the co-ed team.
Youth Recreation
A variety of recreation opportunities are available
for youth in grades 6-12. UMYF
(United Methodist Youth Fellowship) offers many recreation-focused events.
A sampling of recent programs includes soccer, a ropes course, roller
skating, basketball, volleyball, laser tag, bowling, canoe and ski trips.
The Youth Room itself houses Air Hockey, a pool table, a ping pong table,
and a host of other games. A complete schedule is available from the Director
of Youth and Recreation Ministries.
