A new worship service will be offered at AUMC beginning in August. This new service will be engaging and inter-generational, with a less liturgical, more casual format, and a mixture of contemporary music coupled with modernized traditional hymns. It will be offered at 8:30 a.m. We believe this service, along with our traditional service at 11 a.m., will provide AUMC members with two distinct options for worshipping God on Sunday mornings. Further, with two worship options, we hope AUMC will become more inviting to the unchurched in the Annandale community, especially young families seeking a faith community.

Here are some answers to questions you may have about the new service:

What will the new worship service look like?
Our goal is to create multiple environments where we can meet with God in a genuine and personal way. Our intention for each service will be to spend time in worship through song, prayer and Word. The format for these services is still being finalized, and we welcome feedback from everyone who participates.

Why is this happening?
The new service is in response to years of requests and discernment by our leadership to offer an alternative worship service for our Annandale community. We recognize by offering a new service, we can cast our nets further and reach new people with the good news of Jesus Christ.  This new service broadens the worship service options on Sunday mornings for those interested in coming to experience the Holy Spirit in a powerful way, along with other followers of God.

Who will lead the new service?
The service will be led by a combination of clergy, staff and lay leaders. Lay leadership has stepped forward to help with roles in music and hospitality. Music teams are being formed by Trish Bradley and Mallory Dreyer, under the supervision of Pat Vaughn. Our clergy team and staff will continue to be responsible for giving the sermons on Sunday mornings.

When and where is this happening?
Our new service will be in the sanctuary at 8:30 a.m., beginning on Sunday, Aug. 6. Typically during the month of August, services are combined and meet at 11 a.m. We invite everyone to come out and experience this new service being offered in the 8:30 a.m. time slot.
The 11 a.m. service will continue as in the past.

What will happen to the 11 a.m. service?
Our 11 a.m. service will continue in its current format, with more emphasis given to liturgy, reciting creeds and traditional hymnology. Our choir will also continue to participate weekly in the 11 a.m. service, with opportunities for our many talented vocalists to share their gifts during the
8:30 a.m. service as well.

How can I get involved?  (I’m so glad you asked!)
You can get involved in several ways. First, we are looking for musicians who would like to become part of one of our worship teams or would like to share a special piece of music, perhaps during offertory. In a broader sense, we are looking for artists (singers, painters, dancers, etc.) who are interested in sharing their talents on Sunday mornings.

Second, we are looking for people to be part of our hospitality team on Sunday mornings. As new people attend this service, we want to be intentional in reaching out and helping these families feel welcome and connected. We will be training and utilizing volunteers on Sunday morning to make sure that our visitors feel at home at AUMC.

Lastly, we want to hear from you! We plan to have informational meetings about this new service, with the first one on July 2 after the 8:30 a.m. service. Additionally, we will be having post-service feedback meetings after each of the services in August to learn your thoughts and reactions. We welcome everybody to come out, plug in and experience what God has to offer!
