Class and group leaders at AUMC bring a variety of knowledge and experiences to their work. This allows the Academy to hold vibrant classes with an array of viewpoints. To learn about the person behind any part of the Academy's activities, read the biographies below.

Pam Adams
Pam is a committed disciple of Jesus Christ and a member of AUMC. In striving to be an obedient disciple, she felt led to co-facilitate a Disciple study. She says, “My heart has been opened to a spiritual gift that I never would have imagined … teaching God’s Word … who knew!!” Since then, Pam has taught Holy Spirit 101, and a Beth Moore study. She has an unquenchable thirst for God’s Word and a passion for others to know about what the Bible teaches.

Jerry Beyer
Jerry has been a member of AUMC since 1986.  He has served on various committees at AUMC, and is the current Sunday School Superintendent.  He has been a member of the Bible Fellowship Class for the past 15 years, and began leading the class in 2014. He has software degrees from North Carolina State and Univ. of Virginia, and worked in industry for 35 years in an engineering capacity. 

Rev. Dr. Clarence Brown, Jr.
Dr. Brown is the Senior Pastor at AUMC. He is known across the conference for his strong preaching and expertise in church revitalization. Prior to his arrival, he served as District Superintendent of the Norfolk and Charlottesville Districts, Senior Pastor of St. Paul UMC in Chesapeake, VA, and as Director of the Wesley Westminster Foundation at Norfolk State University. He holds a B.A. from Georgia State University, a M. Div. from Gammon Theological Seminary (Atlanta, GA), and a D. Min. from Wesley Theological Seminary.

Jerry Bruce
Jerry Bruce is a member of AUMC. He and his wife recently moved to Virginia to be near their son and his family, including their two grandchildren. A native of California, Jerry completed undergraduate and graduate school in the San Francisco Bay Area before entering the navy for a 22 year career. He and his family then moved to London where he lived and worked for 13 years as a teacher, preacher, overseeing social services for the London New River Circuit and Harrow-Hillingdon Circuit of the British Methodist Church. 

Tracy Carney
Tracy has been a member of AUMC since 1993. She has co-facilitated the Women in Search of Truth class with Margaret Vaughn since 2008. She has participated in Community Bible Study (CBS) for 12 years, including studies of the Pentateuch, Isaiah, the Gospels and various letters of Paul. Her husband, Clay, and teenage daughter, Kyla, are also members of AUMC.  

Harry Day
Harry has a Ph.D. in Personality and Social Psychology from Cornell University. He has had an interest in human personal and social behavior from a cross-cultural perspective throughout his career in program evaluation and applied social research. He also has had a drive for spiritual growth since childhood. Leading the Exploring Faith Class for more than 20 years has been a significant opportunity for the Holy Spirit to nurture spiritual growth in himself and others.

Gary and Jeanie FitzGibbon
Gary FitzGibbon is a long-time member of AUMC. He has been helping lead the Grace and Truth Small Group since it began in 2008. He has been a local real estate agent for many years. He lives in Annandale with his wife Jeanie. They have two adult children, Kelly and Ryan.

Bill Iwig
Bill has been a member of AUMC since 1985 and has served as a leader of the In His Steps Class since its beginning in the mid-1990s. He also founded the I Kings Men's Bible Study group in January 1998. He is a trained Stephen Minister and has served in many different roles at church. His spiritual journey has been blessed tremendously over the years by the In His Steps class, the United Methodist Men, I Kings Bible Study, his Emmaus Walk, the Kairos Prison Ministry, and Annandale UMC.

Rudy Meekins
Rudy Meekins has been a member of AUMC for over 50 years and has been teaching for over 30 years. He has also served on the Staff Parish and Finance committees. He served in the United States Marines and served in the Korean War. He also is a realtor with Meekins & Associates.

Todd Mitchell and Michelle Mock
Todd and Michelle joined AUMC in 1989. They have served as children’s and youth Sunday school teachers. They completed Disciple I and II Bible study classes and have hosted small groups and Bible studies in their home. Michelle serves as a professional mediator/facilitator/coach. Todd is a telecommunications systems engineer.

Dottie Rogerson
Dottie has been membership secretary at AUMC for over 20 years. She has previously co-led the Thursday small group, and is currently co-leading the Centering Prayer group. She is married to John Rogerson. They have four children and many grandchildren.

Kevin Sabo
Kevin has been leading the Issues in Christianity class for over six years with such varied topics as Science and Religion, an Archaeological Walk Through the Bible, War and Peace, and the missing Gospels. He has served as chair of the AUMC Worship Committee, and he is currently chair of the Staff Parish Relations Committee. Kevin holds a graduate certificate from Wesley Theological Seminary, a law degree from Catholic University, and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from George Mason University.

Ramona Thompson
Ramona is a long-time member of AUMC. She has taught Bible studies at the church and in her home and has assisted with seminars in Europe. She has a degree in Social Studies with minors in Greek and Bible. She has been married to Burnett Thompson for 64 years; they have three children and six grandchildren.

Janet Woods
Having been descended from a long line of Methodist Sunday School teachers, Christian education is in Janet’s genes.  She recently retired from Fairfax County Public Schools and feels blessed to lead an enthusiastic group of adults in the Immanuel Class. Their spirited weekly discussions are conducted with much love and respect.   The topics can range widely, but are always scripturally based.  We welcome all to our Sunday fellowship and study time.
