Welcome to the AUMC Weekday Preschool!

The Weekday Preschool, established in 1960 by the Commission on Education of the Annandale United Methodist Church, is a non-profit and non-discriminatory program which is governed by the AUMC Weekday Child Development Committee.

Principles and Objectives

Our primary objective is to assist each child in developing into happy, healthy, self-confident individuals. Our program builds a strong foundation for later academic education by encouraging self-motivated learning. We are committed to creating communities for children and families that:

  • provide a developmentally appropriate, stimulating, and creative curriculum
  • foster the development of language and early literacy
  • create opportunities to practice large and small motor skills
  • promote early math skills
  • develop an appreciation for music, rhythm, and movement
  • expose children to a wide variety of artistic activities
  • explore a world of science, discovery, and experimentation
  • provide a safe and nurturing environment
  • respect and accept people of all cultures, religions, abilities, genders, ages, and family structures
  • provide experiences which enhance each child’s social, physical, intellectual, emotional and creative growth
  • offer a curriculum that is child-centered, open-ended, process oriented, and play-based
  • help children understand their own feelings and the feelings of others
  • allow children choices and decision-making opportunities
  • develop self-control and self-discipline
  • enhance positive growth, development, self-esteem, confidence, individuality, autonomy, and success

These goals are incorporated into the daily lesson plans through developmentally appropriate practices. All children are encouraged to progress at their own pace and according to individual needs and abilities.

Our children are our future. Let us help them grow through:

  • Leadership
  • Communication
  • Critical Thinking
  • Problem Solving
  • Creativity
  • Values and Ethics
  • Empathy
  • Citizenship

Accreditation and Licensure

The Weekday Preschool is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC accreditation is the mark of a high quality program and indicates that the program is continually striving to provide the best educational opportunities for your child.  For more information on the standards maintained by nationally accredited programs, visit their website at www.naeyc.org.

The Weekday Preschool is also licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services.  To view the standards required of state licensed programs, you can visit their website at www.dss.virginia.gov.

Curriculum

The curriculum adheres to the theory that children learn best through play. The daily curriculum offers a variety of hands-on learning activities and provides experiences for social interaction, inquiry, and skill development. The children are provided with a wide range of developmentally appropriate experiences to include music, science, early math, early literacy, language enrichment, art, sensory activities, creative movement, dramatic play, cooking activities, and computers.

Faculty

WPS lead teachers are degreed and experienced. Assistant Teachers are either degreed, have an early Childhood credential (CDA), or are actively working towards one.

Security checks are performed on each staff member. Hiring practices are non-discriminatory. Continuing education opportunities are required annually and made available to all teachers.

Classes

Each classroom maintains a safe and age-appropriate child-to-staff ratio. There is a lead teacher and an assistant teacher in each classroom. In concurrence with Fairfax County Public Schools, class assignments are based on the age of the child by September 30.

Families

Our program also supports families in a variety of ways to facilitate effective parenting by providing educational opportunities throughout the school year. One way we do this is through morning and evening Parent Coffees with speakers on topics of interest to families with young children.
